English: Visual description of the interaction between the hypothalamus and the anterior and posterior pituitary glands. The hypothalamus produces the hormones oxytocin and vasopressin in its endocrine cells and releases these hormones from its nerve endings in the posterior pituitary gland (left). They are then secreted in the systemic circulation and diffuse to the target tissue. The hypothalamus releases tropic hormones into the hypophyseal portal system to the anterior pituitary. These hormones stimulate the releases of trophic hormones from the anterior pituitary to the circulation and target tissues. The response elicited from the target tissues feedbacks to the hypothalamus and anterior pituitary glands to continue or stop the release of precursor signals. |
