English: Biogeochemical cycling in the ocean. Microorganisms dominate transformations of carbon at the base of the food web, consuming inorganic carbon and producing particulate and dissolved organic matter. Particulate material can be oxidized or form aggregates and sink to the deep ocean or even to the seafloor. Dissolved organic matter partitions into discrete pools of that cycle on short (labile) or long (refractory) time scales.
